A Comprehensive Guide to Selecting and Cleaning MBR Flat-Plate Membrane Modules

MBR, or Membrane Bioreactor, is a cutting-edge water treatment technology that combines the activated sludge process with membrane separation techniques.

MBR, or Membrane Bioreactor, is a cutting-edge water treatment technology that combines the activated sludge process with membrane separation techniques. MBR membranes come in four main types: hollow fiber membranes, flat-sheet membranes, ceramic membranes, and tubular membranes.

How to clean a flat membrane?

The operating pressure for the flat membrane is 0–35 kPa. Driven by a self-priming pump (which cycles every 10 minutes—pumping for 8 minutes followed by a 2-minute pause)—water passes through a microporous filter membrane made of a polymer material. The membrane’s uniform pore size effectively traps particles, bacteria, and other contaminants from the water. Here’s how it works:

Filtration effect:

The membrane retains the microorganisms in the reactor, increasing the concentration of activated sludge in the tank (typically around 6,000–12,000 mg/L), which accelerates and enhances the biochemical reactions responsible for wastewater degradation.

Thanks to the membrane's high filtration precision, the effluent is guaranteed to be clear and transparent, resulting in high-quality water production.

Cleaning method:

Membranes aren’t all-powerful—they have pore sizes, and anything smaller than those pores can’t be filtered out. When particles or contaminants that don’t meet the filtration criteria accumulate near the membrane pores, they cause fouling—what we commonly refer to as "membrane clogging." This leads to insufficient water production and prevents the membrane from achieving its intended flow rate. Once fouling occurs, the membrane needs to be cleaned, and cleaning methods are typically divided into online cleaning and offline cleaning.

Through the information provided above, we hope to help you better understand how to select and clean MBR flat membrane modules.

The Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is a biochemical reaction system that integrates membrane separation technology with the biodegradation process of a bioreactor.

How a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Works

The MBR contains a bioreactor where microorganisms degrade organic waste. This stage is similar to the conventional activated sludge process, as the microbes break down the waste, converting it into water and carbon dioxide.

What are the unique features of hollow fiber membranes?

The hollow fiber membrane is designed to feature a large specific surface area and highly efficient hydrodynamic conditions, enabling it to achieve a high permeation rate during liquid processing.
